There are rules in every country you visit. Some written ones, some unwritten. It's the same in Iceland as in other countries... and I would really like to teach you about some common rules and how to avoid some mistakes while traveling in Iceland. 1. Don't tip Icelanders do not expect you to tip them. Some might even look at it as an insult. 2. Don't drive too fast Our roads are NOT made for fast driving and believe me... you don't want to experience what can happen if you drive too fast on gravel roads. Every year tourists have some accidents in Iceland either when driving too fast or when trying to cross a river that shouldn't be crossed. 3. Don't expect perfect weather You should never arrive in Iceland with great expectations about the weather. Be prepared for everything and let the good weather surprise you if it comes! 4. Don't go into the swimming-pool without washing Our spas are great. And strict rules about hygiene help to make them so great! You will not be allowed to enter the pool without taking a shower without your swimming suit. And if you do try to avoid it, a guard is likely to remind you or others by pointing to the signs which are everywhere... It is therefore best to avoid making a fool of yourself trying to avoid proper washing... 5. Don't think the guy at the rental car company is lying ...when he tells you your vehicle is not suited for F category roads. And beware... your insurance does not cover 4x4 roads if you don't have a 4x4 car! 6. Don't pack only for summer weather ... even if it IS summer. Look for a good and complete packing list! 7. Don't think it only takes you about an hour to drive 100 km in Iceland. To start with, the speed limit normally is 90 km pr hour in the countryside, but mostly that will be too fast on gravel roads... - Also, you will see so much that you will automatically stop often to take photos or enjoy the view. 8. Don't think one week-end is enough to see all Iceland A week-end trip is fine, only don't think you can "see it all" during that time :-). I recommend 10 - 14 days if you really want to see something! 9. Don't think freedom means you can't get lost You will certainly experience a sense of freedom in Iceland, but you still can get lost. Always travel with a good map and let someone know where you are headed and likely to be back. 10. Don't expect a gas station every 10 km or so... You will often find long stretches of road without any gas station at all for quite some time. So don't take chances, fill up your car if you're not sure. |
